Newcastle United are close to completing a £15million deal for Aston Villa target Charlie Austin from Queens Park Rangers, according to reports from the Metro.
The 25-year-old is being eyed as another reinforcement following the Magpies’ recent acquisition of Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht.
Villa are also hoping to secure Austin’s services as a potential replacement for Christian Benteke, who completed a £32.5million switch to Liverpool last week.
However, Newcastle boss Steve McClaren will have to meet QPR’s £15million valuation of the striker if he is to lure him to St James’ Park, an amount equal to the price they paid for Mitrovic.
With Papiss Cisse often being sidelined through injury and Emmanuel Riviere only managing to net one goal last term, McClaren is ready to increase his options in regards to his front line.
Austin impressed for his side last term, featuring in 35 league matches, scoring 18 goals, but was unable to help his team avoid relegation into the Championship.
