Newcastle United winger Gabriel Obertan underwent a thigh surgery which will now keep him sidelined for around five months after only recently hitting top form, Daily Star reports.
The former Manchester United man was continuously overlooked over the past year, making only three substitute appearances the entire last season.
However, his sudden rise in form saw him relieve the pressure off Alan Pardew by helping his side win the first game of the new campaign and is said to be playing the best football of his career.
Despite his injury, Sammy Ameobi, who is beginning to make his mark for the Magpies has revealed that he will be aiming to step up to the plate in the absence of Obertan.
“I want to start for Newcastle every week so I’ve got to make the most of this opportunity and make sure I don’t slip up.
“It’s one thing being told you have talent but I’m at an age when I have to produce it.
“I’m a grown man so it’s not about potential anymore. I have to start playing like a man and acting like a man and hopefully this season can be the start of that.”
