Newcastle United have completed the £13million transfer of Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht, subject to being granted a work permit, according to reports from the BBC.
Mitrovic has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks, with Chelsea also interested in signing the highly-rated Serbia international striker.
However, it is the Magpies that won the race for his signature, with the 20-year-old penning a five year contract with the Tyneside club.
“This is a club with a very big history and the fans are a big part of that. There will be pressure here, for sure, but I like pressure,” he said.
“I also know about the famous players who have played for Newcastle United, like Alan Shearer, who is a hero of mine. I hope I can play like him for this club. It will be an honour.”
The arrival of Mitrovic is Newcastle’s second major signing of the summer following the capture of Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum from PSV Eindhoven, who cost the club £14.5million.
This means that Premier League champions Chelsea will be forced to look elsewhere for a back-up forward after the departure of Didier Drogba and Loic Remy’s expected exit before the end of the current window.
Mitrovic had an extremely impressive campaign for Anderlecht in the Belgium Jupiler league last season, scoring 27 goals in all competitions.
