Jonjo Shelvey put in an impressive performance during last weekend’s 1-1 draw with his former club Liverpool, but it has emerged that the Newcastle United midfielder has suffered an injury scare.
The Chronicle reports that the 25-year-old broke a finger during a training session at the Magpies’ Benton Training Centre on Thursday.
Despite the blow, the publication states that Shelvey is expected to be available for Newcastle’s Premier League match against Southampton next week.
The Chronicle goes on to say that the midfielder has fractured the fifth metacarpal on his left hand, but with the help of a cast, he should be able to carry on with his normal training regime.
The Premier League does not allow players to compete wearing a plaster cast, but a lightweight version is permitted in the rules.
Shelvey, who was not included in Gareth Southgate’s recent England squad, has another nine days to be ready for Newcastle’s trip to the South Coast.
