Former Stoke City midfielder Lou Macari believes that Newcastle United will fail in their attempt to sign Ryan Shawcross.
According to The Independent, the Potters defender will become a top priority in Rafael Benitez’s summer plans if the club seal promotion to the Premier League.
Shawcross has been a reliable man at the back for Stoke over the years since his 2008 move from Manchester United.
This season, the centre-back has played in all but three of the team’s Premier League games, indicating that he is still an important figure for manger Mark Hughes.
With that being said, it would be difficult to convince Stoke to part with their man, but Macari believes that Shawcross himself would not be interested in a switch.
Writing in The Sentinel Macari said:
“You can never be sure in this day and age, but I’d be amazed if Ryan Shawcross lined up at the start of next season in the black and white stripes of Newcastle United.
“Gone are the days when a good Stoke player could be lured away by the promise of a much higher wage elsewhere. No disrespect to Newcastle, but I can’t see the attraction of them right now if I’m Ryan Shawcross.”
Over the years, Stoke have become regular mid-table club, but they managed to push into the top 10 last season with a ninth-placed finish.
As it stands, Hughes’s side are capable of repeating that in this campaign as they currently reside 11th, just one point adrift of 10th and five behind eighth-placed West Bromwich Albion with five games left to play.
