Norwich plan striker swoop

Fabio Quagliarella

Norwich City are set to step up their bid to sign Juventus striker Fabio Quagliarella, after an injury to new £5million forward Gary Hooper, reports the Metro.

The club’s summer signing from Celtic was stretchered off at Carrow Road and taken to hospital with a shin injury, during the club’s 2-0 pre-season win over Greek side Panathinaikos.

Hooper is preparing to undergo a second scan to find out the extent of the damage to his shin, and is a major doubt for the club’s first game of the Premier League season against Everton on Saturday.

The injury may see Norwich delve into the transfer market once more, with Juve forward Quagliarella set firmly in their sights.

The club have been linked with a move for the Italian over the summer, speculation that has increased following confirmation from Juventus that two strikers will be sold this summer.

The club currently have six forwards on their books following the summer arrivals of Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez, meaning Quagliarella is most likely to make way.

However Norwich boss Chris Hughton is refusing to panic following Hooper’s injury, simply stating the club will ‘wait and see.’

“What Gary has done is gone to hospital for a precautionary scan and an X-ray. He took a bang on the side of his shin,” Hughton said.

“I could tell it was going to be a sore one. We are hoping it is going to be okay and that in effect all it is, is an injury that is painful for a little while.”
