O’Neill targets Villa extension

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill believes he has proved himself at the club and is full of optimism that he will be handed an extension at the Premier League side next season.

O'Neill was subject to mass media interest earlier in the season and he was tipped to walk-out on the Villa Park club after an alleged clash with owner Randy Lerner.

However, O'Neill rubbished the rumours and he is hopeful of thrashing out new terms with the American tycoon in the summer as he seeks to guide the Midlands outfit to Europa League qualification at the end of the season.

Speaking to reporters, he said:"I think I've earned that right. As far as I'm concerned it's straightforward.

"People make judgements and calls and I will see if the Villa fans are disgruntled with it.

"I will then see if the chairman, who has a big say in proceedings, agrees with that.

"There are people with a big say. I include Villa fans, the chairman and myself in that.

"If this season has turned out pretty well, great. If it hasn't, I will sit and assess things then with my employer, the chairman."
