O’Neill: Young must believe

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has urged winger Ashley Young to believe in himself fully when he reports for international duty with England.

The 24-year-old faces a fight to try and secure a place in the England squad for the World Cup finals this summer, having made just one start for the national team to date.

O'Neill told the club's official website:"There has been talk that when Ashley goes away with England he is not the same vibrant fellow he is with us.

"It is just something that seems to emanate on the rumour mill that he doesn't exude the same self-confidence. If that is the case, I understand it.

"When you get someone believing in you – which I do in Ashley – sometimes when you go away and are mixing with a group of other people and are naturally vibrant, you don't want to be the same character because you think those great players England possess have already done it.

"There is a tendency to be a wee bit quiet, but it doesn't mean you should desert your own character.

"But he also doesn't have to go and show off with England. All he has to do is go in and perform in the manner he has for the club, because that is what Fabio Capello is doing. He is picking players on club form."
