Swansea City boss Paul Clement is hopeful that Claude Makelele will stay among his coaching after the end of the season.

The 44-year-old, who was a crucial member of Chelsea’s team during his five-year spell back in his playing days, joined the Welsh outfit in January.

It was a surprise appointment from Clement, who took on the main job from sacked Bob Bradley at the start of the year.

Makelele is no stranger to Clement’s methods having worked alongside the Englishman at Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

Since his arrival, the club have improved slightly having won three of their last four Premier League fixtures, including a dramatic 3-2 triumph over Liverpool.

The club are not out of the woods yet with regards to the relegation fight, but they now sit four points above the drop zone following seven wins, three draws and 15 defeats.

If the Swans manage to retain their position in the top flight, Clement wants to keep his team, which consist of assistant Nigel Gibbs and head of physical performance Karl Halabi, in place.

Makelele, though, is the only one not to have agreed a deal that runs into next season.

Wales Online quotes Clement as saying:

“If we keep moving in the direction we’re going in then there would be no reason to change anything, but it’s like the situation with a lot of the players, we’ll discuss that at a later point.

“[Makelele] brings interaction to players in small groups, giving them little gems of information and what to do in a certain situation. He really captures someone when he talks to them. We have a nice blend.”
