The 24-year-old moved to Tyneside from Tottenham Hotspur in January and went on to bag four goals in 13 Premier League appearances.
But that return wasn’t enough to prevent the Magpies’ relegation or secure the England international a spot in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad.
According to Express and Star, West Bromwich Albion are ready to give Townsend another chance in the Premier League, amid news of his contract including a £10.5million release clause.
However, Townsend isn’t the only Magpies star on the Baggies’ radar, with manager Tony Pulis also eyeing midfielder Moussa Sissoko – according to The Birmingham Mail.
The France international was one of the Toon’s better performers last season, claiming seven assists, and has impressed sporadically at the European Championship.
But it’s believed Newcastle want in excess of £10million for Sissoko, whilst the player himself may be chasing a move to a larger club.
