Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has stated that Toby Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
The Belgium international joined the White Hart Lane outfit from Atletico Madrid in the summer, after impressing last term while on loan at Southampton.
Alderweireld has played a key role in the North London club’s progressive campaign to date, with Spurs a more miserly side with the enforcer in the heart of their defence.
The Belgian has partnered well with compatriot Jan Vertonghen, with the pair making Tottenham are harder team to beat as a result.
The duo will come up against arguably the Premier League’s in-form striker Romelu Lukaku as Spurs face Everton at Goodison Park this weekend, with Pochettino admitting that Alderweireld will play a big role in blunting the centre forward.
“It is obvious after 19 games that Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the Premier League,” Pochettino told The Guardian.
“I think it is easy to analyse him now. He has given us very good performance and maturity and experience. He is a great boy, a great man.”
“For me, it is important how we work as a team, to try and defend our goal, and to have a very good balance. But it is true that Toby has made a very good impact in the team.”
Tottenham are in the top four and will hope that a positive result against Everton can play a role in eventual Champions League qualification.
