Portsmouth: Can Adams get off to a winning start tonight? Is he the right man for the job?

Football FanCast columnist
Rob Facey
wonders whether Tony Adams is the man to get
the best out of the Portsmouth players and asks if he can convince them
to stay come January?

Tony Adams has demanded his players
are 100% committed to Portsmouth as he looks to open a new chapter at
Fratton Park.

Speaking at his first press conference
since taking the job, the former Arsenal and England captain reacted
to comments made by new Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, the man Adams replaced
at Portsmouth, who had declared his interest in the likes of Jermain
Defoe and Peter Crouch.

"None of them have to come to
me but if they do, and they want to go, I will let them go,"
said, as reported in the Guardian.

"I want people who want to play
for Portsmouth absolutely. You've got to have players who are happy
and want to play for the football club, 100%. If they don't want to
play for Portsmouth, then they will do you no good in the long run."

Adams' honesty will please the Portsmouth
fans who are still reeling from Redknapp's lightning quick exit, but
is this an admission that there are players at the club who will be
looking to follow ‘Arry out of the club?

How likely are players of the standard
of Defoe and Crouch to stay and see what Adams can do at the club?

Will UEFA Cup football be enough to
convince them to stay come January?

Adams also declared himself ready for
the Premier League, despite his only experience of management being
a year long spell at Wycombe a few years ago.

"I am with the big boys now.
I was just after a No1 position,"

he said.

"The Premiership is an unbelievably
tough league and sometimes you have to go with the flow a little bit.
But this is an opportunity I'm going to take. It just feels right."

Adams was Redknapp's popular assistant
so he is already a fans favourite on the South Coast, but are fans not
concerned with the haste in which he was appointed?

Do fans think that he has what it takes
to continue on the good work that Redknapp had started and can Adams
get off to a winning start tonight?

Was he the best man for the job? Would
the fans not have preferred a name like Venables and Grant to come in
and steady the ship, if only to convince the players to stay?
