Prime candidate rejects Aston Villa job, two gaffers still in the running

According to reports from The Daily Mail, David Moyes has rejected a formal offer to become Aston Villa‘s next manager.

The relegated Villains are still yet to replace Remi Garde, who left by mutual consent in March, with Kevin Black leading the team on a caretaker basis during the latter weeks of the 2015/16 season.

According to The Daily Mail, there were three managers in contention; ex-Everton and Manchester United boss David Moyes, one-time Chelsea gaffer Roberto Di Matteo and former Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson.

But Moyes – who has been out of work since being sacked by Real Sociedad in November 2015 – is believed to have turned down the job following talks with representatives of Villa’s new owner, Tony Xia, on Thursday night.

That leaves Di Matteo and Pearson in contention to lead Villa through their first season in the Championship, although the latter is also believed to be in talks with Serie A outfit Lazio.
