It seemed as though Chelsea were on the losing end when Romelu Lukaku opted to join Manchester United rather than return to Stamford Bridge from Everton.

However, according to Stan Collymore, the Premier League champions have lucked out with the signing of Alvaro Morata.

The Spaniard signed for the Blues last week from Real Madrid on a five-year deal and is believed to have cost around £58m, reports The Guardian.

If the fee is correct, then Chelsea have paid £17m less than United, who according to The Telegraph handed over an initial £75m to Everton, but could end up parting with £90m in add-ons.

Lukaku has plenty of experience in English football and will be under pressure to score given that he nabbed 25 goals in the top flight last year.

This season will be Morata’s first taste of the Premier League having spent his entire career so far in Spain and Italy.

For Collymore, even though he highly rates Lukaku, he believes that Chelsea got a better deal in securing the signature of Morata, who was also linked to United this summer.

He wrote in The Mirror:

“Chelsea’s capture of Alvaro Morata means they have just - but only just - won the battle with Manchester United in signing a big-name striker. The Spaniard is a good all-rounder, a grafter who will run into channels and make a nuisance of himself, and that kind of all-action style will go down a treat in the Premier League.

“He’s a big lad, at 6ft 2in, and quite wiry, rather than a big bruiser like Romelu Lukaku. But, more importantly, he’s a consistent 7/10 or 8/10 player, whereas Lukaku can be 10/10 in one game, but 5/10 in the next.”
