Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has claimed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ready to jump ship because he wants a new challenge.
The England international has been part of the North London club since his 2011 switch from Southampton.
Despite being at Arsenal for seven years, it has only really been in the last couple of seasons when he has been used more regularly in the team.
For the most part of his career, Oxlade-Chamberlain has had to settle for a place on Arsene Wenger’s substitutes bench.
This season, though, the 24-year-old has started every Premier League game playing in a wing-back position, but it is believed that his favoured role is through the middle.
It seems as though the attack-minded player could be on his way to London rivals Chelsea after Sky Sports reported that a fee between the two clubs has been agreed.
Winterburn questions whether Stamford Bridge is the right place for Oxlade-Chamberlain, but understands that the player wants to move on.
The pundit told Sky Sports:
“We are hearing he wants to play in a more central midfield role but with the clubs he’s been linked with, I can’t see that.
“Personally, I think he’s had enough at Arsenal, it’s time to move on and face a new challenge. He’s been sensational at wing-back. So he could compete with Moses at Chelsea.
“If he wants to play midfield in an attacking role, because I think that is where he wants to play, but at Chelsea that’s Willian or Pedro. And can he really be guaranteed a starting place above those players?”
