Former Premier League defender Richard Dunne believes that Virgil van Dijk should choose Chelsea instead of Liverpool.

The Southampton defender's future remains up in the air after he was left out of the club's squad for a pre-season trip to France.

Manager Mauricio Pellegrino later claimed that Van Dijk was training alone as he was not in the right frame of mind to be with the group.

Last month, Liverpool publicly withdrew their interest and apologised to Southampton after being accused of tapping up the Dutchman.

However, Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that Van Dijk expects to join the Reds before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

Despite this, Chelsea remain interested in the centre-back and have included him in their list of targets, according to the Daily Mail.

Dunne believes that if Van Dijk has a choice, he should opt for the Premier League champions rather than Jurgen Klopp's team.

He told talkSPORT:

“I think he is very good. If he has the opportunity to go to Chelsea, then they are the stronger of the two, so I think he should go there. He would suit playing three at the back as well.

"It’s disappointing the way things have worked out for him over the summer and he is being forced to train alone, but over the next couple of weeks [you’d think] he will get his move.”
