QPR’s recent history hasn’t been one for fans to look back on and smile. The Hoops have failed to make it past the Round 3 for the last three seasons, as they have been knocked out on each occasion by a team from a lower division. So when Swindon came to Loftus Road, there was some concern from fans that their recent poor form in the cup would continue.

Harry Redknapp made six changes to the side that beat Bolton 1-0 at the weekend, and had early chances through Jermaine Jenas and Alejandro Faurlin. But the experienced manager knows the importance of taking your chances, and what can happen if you don’t. Against the run of play, Alex Pritchard’s cross was met at the back post by former Newcastle striker Nile Ranger who scored his first goal for Swindon.

Changes were made to QPR’s side after the break, as Bobby Zamora came on alongside Mo Sharif, who was making his Rangers debut. The 20-year-old was a bright spark, creating another opportunity for Jenas and Shaun Wright-Philips. Charlie Austin then thought he had scored the equaliser, only for the referee to disallow the goal for offside.

Pritchard sealed the win for Swindon in stoppage time, to a cry of boos from the home supporters at their side’s performance. But while some fans aimed their frustration at the entire team, some of QPR’s fan pages on Twitter were more specific to one person. @Loftforwords tweeted: “Zamora surely, surely done now. Never mind surgery he's got to be borderline retirement,” while @VitalQPR tweeted: “While I don't condone booing anyone, Zamora and SWP have done themselves no favours again.”

It was a strong reaction from fans who are yet to see their side lose in the Championship since their relegation from the Premier League back in May, with Rangers winning three of their four matches so far. Maybe it was the six changes to the starting XI, or maybe Redknapp spent the days before the match looking for some more deadline day deals, but for whatever reason it just didn’t click for the Hoops. Only four of their 15 attempts were on target, and Swindon made them pay.
