Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has pleaded his innocence after the Reds were accused of unsettling Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones.
Black Cats boss Steve Bruce accused the Anfield club of being "disrespectful" amid continuing reports of interest in his club's Trinidad and Tobago international.
The suggestion that Jones could join Liverpool on loan for the remainder of the season particularly upset Bruce.
However, Reds boss Benitez claims he has not personally been part of any move to attempt to sign Jones.
"I was not dealing with this," said the Spaniard."(Managing director) Christian Purslow has been talking with (Sunderland chairman) Niall Quinn so they have to manage the situation because I was not doing anything.
"I prefer not to talk too much because we will create a debate so Christian and Niall will continue to talk if they need to talk.
"They were in contact but I don't know what the situation is now."
Meanwhile, Benitez has confirmed that reserve team midfielder Damien Plessis could be heading out of the club to Italy during the transfer window.
