Rafa should look to £12m exchange to gazump Man City’s move!

guest columnist Jordan Price feels that Rafa should look to gazump Manchester City's
reported January move for Cruz.

I'm sure there aren't many people who will
disagree with me when I state that Roque Santa Cruz was pound for pound, the
best signing last season. The Paraguayan took to the Premier League like a duck
to water, silenced a lot of his doubters and is now arguably one of the country's
top marksmen.

Mark Hughes deserves great credit for taking
a chance on the misfiring Paraguayan, who struggled at Bayern Munich and he
rewarded Blackburn with a series of stunning displays and not to mention a
bagful of goals. He is simply a handful, with two good feet, fantastic aerial
abilities and to be honest there wasn't many Premier League defences who got
the better of him. Santa Cruz has carried on where he left off last and is
quite rightly attracting the attention of many clubs.

There have been a lot of rumours flying
around in the last weeks that Cruz is apparently itching for a move away from
Blackburn and fancies a new challenge. Manchester City are continually linked,
with the player, who only came out today suggesting that he would welcome a
reunion with his former boss, but I cannot help feel that Cruz is the type of
player that Rafa should look to be bringing to Anfield as we look to strengthen
our title push.

I know we have picked up points in Torres' absence, but I honestly
believe that we are not strong enough to win a title if we don't bring in
another top striker to the club in January. Keane for all his endeavours cannot
lead a line and although Kuyt has put in a sterling effort since the Spaniard
has been out, is not prolific enough or provides that cutting edge we certainly
need – Santa Cruz can provide that and I really feel that Rafa should make a
move.

What I like about Santa Cruz is that he is equally adept at playing in a
front two, as he showed alongside McCarthy, or the lone strikers role when need
be. One of his great strengths is his ability to hold the ball up and with the
likes of Alonso and Gerrard in behind to take any layoffs, then it presents us
with an embarrassment of riches in the final third. His presence would really
take a huge weight of expectation off Torres and allow Rafa to use him
sparingly and save possible burn out of the Spaniard. I believe the current
injury problems that he is facing have been born from a player who hasn't had
any rest for the last 12months with the Euros as well, and it's vital we keep
him as fresh as possible towards the business end of the season.

It remains to be seen as to how much Cruz will cost and with City in the
bidding, we could see it drastically rise, but what we have at Liverpool that
could sway a deal with Blackburn is a lot of excess players on our books that
we could use to broker a deal. Paul Ince has already shown admiration for
Jermain Pennant and he could certainly be used as a pawn, as would the likes of
Hyypia and possibly Dossena, as reports intensify that they may lose Warnock in
January. City could offer all the riches in the world, but you cannot help feel
Ince will be tempted by receiving a cash/player deal and subsequently bringing in
some experience within his ranks. It would seem like a win, win all round,
especially as Cruz will not be cup tied for the Champions League and I only
hope that a deal can be agreed, because he will make one hell of a difference
to our title push.

Should Liverpool look to Santa Cruz
or would you rather spend his money elsewhere?
