Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez reveals that he didn’t mind that his side failed to complete a deal for Manchester United star David De Gea in the summer, according to reports from the Express.
The 24-year-old was on the verge of a move to join the La Liga giants, but a deadline day mishap with his paperwork eventually ended the chance of the switch taking place.
United manager Louis van Gaal decided to drop the goalkeeper and replace him with summer signing Sergio Romero for the first few fixtures before eventually making him his number one when the transfer window came to a close.
Benitez admitted that he was happy with current Real keeper Keylor Navas and praised his professionalism during the summer saga.
“I was having dinner with Keylor that night [on deadline day]. He is a professional and I was delighted with him,” he said.
“I was delighted to have Keylor before [the transfer saga] and I am delighted to have him now.”
It was believed that Navas was set to move the other way if De Gea’s transfer to the Bernabeu was completed, but both players eventually stayed where they were.
The United star has since signed a new contract to extend his stay at Old Trafford for another four years, ending speculation that he was looking to force an exit in the summer.
