HARRY REDKNAPP LEAVES POMPEY TO BECOME SPURS BOSS
So it's true….Harry Redknapp has joined Spurs after the White Hart Lane club paid Portsmouth 5 million pounds in compensation.
Portsmouth were approached on Friday morning whilst warming down on the beach in Portugal by the Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy, who was given permission (albeit reluctantly) to talk to Redknapp.
At that point Harry Redknapp then had a decision to make. Had he achieved everything he could at Portsmouth? Was the lure of the Tottenham job just too hard to resist? It turns out the answer to both those questions is yes.
He also told me what we already knew. Portsmouth is up for sale. He told me his long term future was uncertain; "If a new owner comes in," he said "They might not want me, and this is the chance to manage a massive club before I retire." He also said that five million representated a lot of compensation and was a good deal for the club. In truth it is a lot more than most clubs are compensated in similar situations.
Redknapp has taken Portsmouth to heights unexpected on the day he arrived as Director of Football in 2001, and with a squad assembled that gives them a sure footing.
In our conversation he expressed genuine appreciation and affection for the club and his fans, and whatever your view, your raw emotion, as you wake to this news, no one can argue that he has been one of the greatest manager's in the club's history. But evreyone knows some, understandably will find it hard to take. After all, statistically Portsmouth have been better with him than without him.
It's dissapointing that the marriage is over, but the split was always going to come – the shock is, no one believed it would be soon.
