Roberto Martinez chose to look at his future with Wigan not Everton as Latics finished the season with a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.
Wigan’s fate was already decided heading into the fixture after the defeat to Arsenal sent them packing to the Championship, but Martinez still had to take questions over his future after the game.
Martinez is still the hot favourite to replace outgoing Everton manager David Moyes, but the Spaniard would not be drawn on the rumours and chose instead to praise his players, who he believes will take the club back to the Premier League.
“[My future]’s not the important thing,” Martinez told Sky Sports News. “The important thing is that we’ve won the FA Cup.
“We’ve got an incredible group of players, the football club is in the most solid position that we have ever been and we’re ready to bounce back.”
Martinez has turned down moves to Aston Villa and Liverpool over the past two years and Latics fans will now be hoping he does the same if, as expected, Everton do make an approach.
