Roberto Martinez rules out January sales

Wigan manager Roberto MartinezWigan manager Roberto Martinez has stated that his star players will not be leaving the club during January.

Arsenal are believed to be chasing midfielder James McCarthy, whilst Liverpool are reportedly keen on Franco Di Santo.

Despite this, the Spaniard claims that none of his first-team players will be leaving, as he is keen to keep his squad settled for the second half of the Premier League season:

“I’ve always said it’s a real compliment when you’ve got teams looking at our players,” he is quoted by Sky Sports.

“I think we’ve got players who could attract anyone’s interest. That’s not going to bring anything negative to our squad, it’s the opposite.

“Everything is about Wigan Athletic at this point and individual situations will always be resolved in the best interests of the football club.

“Whenever we lost players, it’s been at the right price and at the right time and I don’t think January is the right time to lose any of our important players when we’re right in the middle of the fight.”

The Latics have already drafted in Manchester United attacker Angelo Henriquez on loan, as well as adding Honduran star Roger Espinoza to his squad.

Even though he has strengthened, the ex-Swansea boss is still on the look out for players this month:

“Now we’re going to work towards getting another body in. I do feel another body would complete the squad and as a football club we’ll work as hard as we can.”

Wigan have endured a disappointing start to the season, amassing 18 points from 21 games, leaving them in the relegation zone, albeit on goal difference.

A poor defensive record has contributed to their struggles, with Martinez’s men having conceded on 39 occasions.
