Robin chasing Gunners boost

Arsenal's Dutch striker Robin van Persie is still upbeat about his chances of returning to action this season, as he continues his recovery from a serious ankle injury.

The 26-year-old has not featured for the Gunners since early November and an operation was expected to see him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

However, van Persie told Studio Voetbal:"I am medically fit, but physically I have to gain. Only then can I train with the full group.

"I'm not there yet, but I've left a difficult period behind. For a few weeks I've been training with the ball and it looks good.

"I still hope I can take part in the final phase of the league and hopefully the Champions League. This has been my goal from the beginning.

"My first goal is to play for Arsenal. When I said that a few months ago, I looked crazy, but as it stands now, that will happen."

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had earlier stated in his programme notes for the 2-0 win over West Ham:"There is still a little chance for Robin van Persie this season.

"We are following his progress and physically he is quite sharp, but once he is ready to kick the ball again and returns from his rehabilitation, it will still take him another three weeks."
