Rooney set 30-goal target

Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney has been backed by manager Sir Alex Ferguson to reach the 30-goal mark by the end of the season.

The 24-year-old England striker has already netted 20 times this term and is clearly relishing the extra responsibility on his shoulders following the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

Ferguson told the Manchester Evening News:"Wayne has got 20 goals and the crucial part of the season is coming up. He could easily get above 30, his ratio at the moment suggests that.

"Giving him that direct role has given him the appetite to be in the box all the time. He still has moments when he goes into other areas of the pitch, but he is choosing those moments more maturely.

"The main reason he is scoring goals is because he is in the right place at the right time. That is what good goalscorers do.

"I don't think he has become more selfish. He is developing his game in the right way. He realises his main asset to us is being the main striker through there, threatening all the time.

"Experience is always a key issue with players of potential. With experience you get a maturity and authority in your game, that is the same with every player."
