Wayne Rooney has apologised to England fans "for any offence caused" by his comments after the goalless draw with Algeria.

England were booed off in Cape Town following a second Group C stalemate which has left their hopes of reaching the last 16 hanging by a thread.

Rooney reacted to the negativity inside the Green Point Stadium with a message to those fans who chose to jeer the players off the pitch.

Speaking directly to the television cameras, the clearly frustrated Manchester United striker said: "Nice to see your home fans booing you. That's loyal supporters."

Rooney's comments have been widely condemned by media and supporters alike and the striker has now sought to draw a line under the issue by apologising in a statement.

"I am as passionate about the England team as anyone. Last night, on reflection I said things in the heat of the moment that came out of frustration of both our performance and the result," he said

"The most important thing now is to regroup be positive and work towards winning the game on Wednesday. To do this the players will need the support of the fans more than ever.

"For my part I apologise for any offence caused by my actions at the end of the game."

England must now win against Slovenia in their final Group C game in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday if they are to qualify for the last 16.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
