Wayne Rooney will miss Manchester United's Premier League clash with Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

The 34-goal striker aggravated his ankle ligament injury during the midweek Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich and will not make the trip to Ewood Park.

Rooney lasted 55 minutes of the quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford on Wednesday night before limping off in obvious pain.

Sir Alex Ferguson has now revealed that the England striker, who missed last weekend's 2-1 league defeat to Chelsea, will not be part of his squad on Sunday.

However, he does expect Rooney to return in time for the Manchester derby at Eastlands on April 17.

"I don't think it's as serious as we said the first time, but I think he'll be ready for the City game," explained Ferguson.

"We've got more time to work on it, anyway. Other than that everyone else is fit."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
