Schalke look to test Tottenham’s resolve with summer bid

Schalke are ready to make a £12 million bid for Tottenham forward Rafael van der Vaart, and have made him their top transfer target this summer according to The Sun.

The German side finished third in the Bundesliga in 2011-12 and with Champions League qualification for next term they are eager to bolster their squad.

With veteran Spanish striker Raul leaving the Veltins Arena this summer, a new forward is on the agenda, with former Hamburg man Van der Vaart the ideal signing.

Netherlands international forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is Schalke’s talisman, and it is believed that last season’s Bundesliga top goalscorer is keen to add his countryman to the German club’s squad.

With Huntelaar stalling on a new contract in Gelsenkirchen, he is thought to have asked his club to sign Van der Vaart in a bid to make him stay.

Spurs are set to face a battle to hold onto their star players after failing to qualify for the Champions League, but most of the speculation has been surrounding Luka Modric and Gareth Bale so far since the end of the season.
