Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has stated that losing Christian Benteke over the summer was the same as Liverpool or Tottenham selling Luis Suarez or Gareth Bale.
The powerhouse Belgian was offloaded to Liverpool after the Anfield outfit chalked up his £32.5 million release clause, with the Birmingham-based outfit unable to prevent their star striker from leaving.
Villa have struggled this season following a summer upheaval, with Benteke’s threat in the final third no longer an asset for the club.
Ahead of this weekend’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Sherwood has likened Benteke’s exit to having the same effect that selling Luis Suarez or Gareth Bale did on Liverpool and Tottenham.
“Benteke leaving was absolutely the same as Suarez, or Gareth Bale,” The Telegraph quote the ex-Tottenham chief as saying.
“If he didn’t have a clause in his contract then £100 million wouldn’t have taken him away from us. He wasn’t worth selling for any money. No money can guarantee you Premier League survival – that player could.”
Villa have only amassed four points from their first eight Premier League games, with pressure mounting on Sherwood and a relegation battle seemingly on the cards.
Rudy Gestede has been brought to Villa Park in an effort to replace Benteke, with the Benin international scoring three top-flight goals so far this term.
