Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that star goalkeeper David De Gea can lead the club to the Premier League title this season.
The Spain international stopper was linked with a return to his homeland over the summer, with Real Madrid eyeing up the star to replace Iker Casillas at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
However a last-gasp deal fell through and the former Atletico Madrid custodian has since penned a new deal at Old Trafford and been reinstated into the United starting XI.
With De Gea showing no adverse effects from his failed transfer to Madrid and pulling off a number of exceptional saves in recent games, it appears that the young stopper is back to his best.
Ferguson, who led the Old Trafford outfit to an unprecedented period of success, has stated that keeping De Gea could well be the difference this term, ahead of the Red Devils facing Sunderland today.
“I think De Gea can actually win us the league,” The Daily Mail quote Ferguson as saying.
“We are second in the league. We are in a good position because, City hadn’t lost a game until last week and then United won at Southampton and the whole thing changes round.
“Chelsea have lost a couple of games, Arsenal have lost a game, if you are there around New Year’s Day then they will have a good chance.”
