Skipper Frei faces anxious wait

Switzerland are sweating on the fitness of Alex Frei ahead of their World Cup opener after the international skipper picked up an ankle injury during training.

The experienced FC Basel striker has been sent for scans following a training-ground collision with team-mate Steve Von Bergen.

"I hope the ligaments are not damaged, that there is no fracture," said concerned coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.

"I believe Alex will be on the flight with us for South Africa even if it's a bad injury. I leave in the belief that he will take part in the World Cup.

"He perhaps will not be ready for the first match (against Spain on June 16) but I will be able to call upon him after that."
