Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has stated that Manchester United should make a move for former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho this summer in a bid to return to their glory days.
The Red Devils have stuttered under Louis van Gaal this term and look set to miss out on the top four following a defeat to West Ham in midweek.
The Dutchman’s contract at Old Trafford still has a year to run but many are tipping the experienced former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss to be relieved of his duties in the summer.
Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea earlier this season after a catastrophic start to the season for the West London side but has stated that he will return to management in July.
Merson feels that should United miss out on Champions League qualification Van Gaal should be sacked at the Old Trafford club should then turn to the outspoken Portuguese.
“I think that will be it, he will be gone, and Jose Mourinho will be the next manager,” the former Arsenal midfielder told Sky Sports.
“If they want to get anywhere near where they want to be, they need to do it quickly, and there is no manager that can do things quickly like Mourinho.
“His impact is very quick and that’s what United want. Van Gaal has a year left on his contract and if you keep him and then three months into the next season he is not doing well then whoever comes in takes over a struggling team, that’s no good.
“The change needs to be made now, Jose Mourinho is the only man for Manchester United, the only man who can bring quick success.”
