Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has slammed Manchester United for their abject performance against Liverpool in the Europa League and has taken aim at Louis van Gaal.
The Red Devils met their bitter domestic rivals in continental competition for the first time last Thursday and were duly dispatched 2-0 at Anfield after being second best.
The result was another blow for the travelling support, who have had to put up with poor performances and uninspiring results this season both domestically and in Europe.
Merson has not held back in his criticism of the Old Trafford outfit or their manager – even stating that he feels sorry for the United fans.
“Shocking, clueless, heartless, and brainless – one of the worst I’ve ever seen,” he said on Sky Sports.
“I felt sorry for Manchester United fans the other night, I don’t usually feel sorry for their fans because of the unbelievable success they’ve had over the years.
“But I felt for them at Anfield. They watched 11 players who didn’t have a clue how big that football match was to those fans.
“Van Gaal didn’t have a clue how big the match was either. He is so far above himself that he didn’t view that as a big game for the fans… either that or he is not worried about the fans getting the hump.”
United have a fight on their hands to finish in the top four this season but are still competing in the FA Cup and Europa League also.
The future of Van Gaal as manager continues to be a hot topic in the press, with speculation he could leave Old Trafford in the summer.
