Southampton boss frustrated with timing of defender rumours

Southampton defender Jose Fonte won’t be joining Manchester United, according to manager Claude Puel.

Puel feels the timing of the rumours are strange, with just two weeks of the transfer window remaining. United have already signed one defender this transfer window, with Eric Bailly moving to Old Trafford.

The new Saints boss is also unhappy that United are being linked with Fonte, the same week the Portuguese defender is set to make his return to the starting line up against the Red Devils on Friday night. Fonte was an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw with Watford, as he finished his recovery from a successful Euro 2016 campaign.

And now, just days from the two teams meeting, Fonte is being linked with a move to his fellow countryman Jose Mourinho:

“There is no problem with Jose, it is just strange that this rumour comes just before the game at United,” Said Puel to the Express.

“There is a possibility that he may travel with us to Old Trafford. But he is a very good professional and he has played well in training sessions this week and it is important to have Jose with us, I hope, for the United game.”

Southampton could secure their third consecutive victory at Old Trafford on Friday night, after Charlie Austin scored the winner on his debut last season.
