Southampton have completed the signing of Oriol Romeu from Chelsea for a fee of £5million, according to reports from the BBC.
The 23-year-old has now signed a three-year deal at St Mary’s Stadium after failing to establish himself in the senior squad for his former club since his arrival from Barcelona back in 2011.
He spent the previous two seasons on loan at Stuttgart and most recently Valencia as he now targets regular playing time with the Saints.
The club’s executive director of football Les Reed revealed that he was monitoring the situation of Romeu and is confident in his abilities due to his experience with the Blues youth setup.
“Like Ryan Bertrand, we believe we have recruited another Chelsea player with an excellent pedigree but also with lots of potential to develop,” he said.
The Spanish midfielder also admitted his delight at finally completing a permanent transfer after being forced to spend his past two campaigns on loan with different teams.
“After spending two years on loan, I needed something permanent and a club with a future – and I think I chose the right one,” he said.
He featured 28 times in all competitions for Stuttgart last term while only managing to make a total of 34 appearances for the Blues since his arrival four years ago.
