Southampton defender Jose Fonte has admitted he would like to play for a Champions League club soon, but has insisted he is happy with the Saints.
That’s according to Sport Witness, who claim Fonte told Portuguese media that he has received informal offers to leave St Mary’s this summer, but none of the interest in the Euro 2016 winner has become official:
“after an European success, interested clubs always show up and there are offers. Let’s wait for the next few weeks… There are several interested sides, but for this to materialise it, it’s something else. Let’s see what happens.” Said Fonte.
The defender, who played in 37 league games last season, missing only one due to suspension, has been heavily linked with Manchester United this summer. But whilst he didn’t discuss joining his fellow countryman Jose Mourinho, the 32-year-old said he would find it difficult to turn down either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Fonte has been at the Saints since 2010, back when Southampton were in League One. And after helping them go from the third division to 6th last season, the centre-back is full of confidence in his own abilities, but reminded the media that he is happy to be at the club for now.
