Southampton line up £2million ‘keeper

Southampton are close to signing 26-year-old goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, according to Sky Sports.

The Saints are looking for a reserve goalkeeper to challenge Fraser Forster this season, and are moving in on a £2million move for the Crystal Palace shot stopper.

Kelvin Davis has retired this summer, whilst the club won’t be taking further action on Maarten Stekelenburg, who’s loan deal at the club expired at the end of last season.

McCarthy has only spent one season at Palace, making 7 Premier League appearances. He failed to keep a clean sheet in all 7.

The 26-year-old was already behind Welsh shot-stopper Wayne Hennessey in the Palace pecking order, but Alan Pardew has now brought Steve Mandanda to Selhurst Park this transfer window. And that extra competition looks set to force McCarthy out of the club, with only 23 career Premier League games under his belt.

Palace would be making a loss on McCarthy, selling him to the Saints for £2million, after paying QPR £3.5million for his services last summer.
