Southampton star struggling with added expectation

Rickie Lambert

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that striker Rickie Lambert is not coping well with the added expectations now on his shoulders, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Lambert has soared to success in recent months with his first caps and goals for England which has added pressure on him to hit form for the Saints.

Pochettino added big money Daniel Osvaldo to his Southampton attack this summer but neither he, nor Lambert have hit the ground running this season as far as goals are concerned.

The Argentinean boss believes that due to Lambert only just reaching the top of the game at 31 years old, he is struggling to take it all in his stride with more people expecting him to produce the goods.

“Rickie is 31 years old. He has come very late to the national team so there is a lot of expectation placed on him and that is something he needs to adapt to,” Pochettino said.

“It puts a lot of mental and physical stress on him all of a sudden being this big star in the national team. But we are very relaxed about his contribution and his performances.

“The only thing we are trying to make him see is that he needs to be more mobile. We want him to be a much more dynamic player. He can move more around the pitch.”
