Southampton are ready to step up their chase to sign Norwich City target Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli to reinforce their backline, according to reports from the Mirror.
The 24-year-old is being eyed by manager Ronald Koeman as an alternative to Toby Alderweireld who decided to join Tottenham Hotspur following his successful loan spell at St Mary’s Stadium last season.
Koulibaly is now being linked with an £8million move from the Serie A giants, but could face competition from Norwich as they are also keen on his addition.
He featured 39 times in all competitions for his side last term, managing to score one goal while providing a further two assists.
Koeman’s side have struggled to keep up their defensive showings from the previous campaign after losing both Morgan Schneiderlin and Nathaniel Clyne to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.
The Saints picked up a 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on opening day and suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of Everton this past weekend.
