Manager Steve Bruce has admitted that is top priority in the next few days is to try and bring an experienced striker to Sunderland.
Having seen Kenwyne Jones join Stoke City in an £8million deal, Bruce is aware that he needs to find a replacement, with West Ham's Carlton Cole, Spurs' Peter Crouch and Asamoah Gyan of Rennes mentioned as possible targets.
Bruce told the Daily Star:"It's absolutely paramount that I replace Kenwyne Jones. I've got to do it.
"We've got a couple of young lads in Danny Welbeck and Martyn Waghorn who will play their part, but they are young boys.
"I would not want to get to the end of the window without another striker here.
"We have one or two irons in the fire, but unfortunately nothing is imminent."
