Steven Gerrard backs Gerard Houllier to be a success

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has backed Gerard Houllier to be a success as Aston Villa.

The former Reds boss was unveiled as the new manager of the Midlands club on Wednesday following a lengthy search for a successor to Martin O'Neill.

Houllier spent six years in the Anfield hot-seat where he won three domestic cups and the UEFA Cup in 2001.

The appointment of the 63-year-old Frenchman has raised eyebrows among some Villa fans following a prolonged period out of club management.

However, Gerrard believes his former mentor will be a success at Villa Park.

"I've still got quite a close relationship with Gerard. He gave me my chance at the top level and I certainly learnt an awful lot from him," he said.

"Aston Villa have got themselves a very good manager and I am not surprised Gerard has come back into the Premier League. I know how much he loves football.

"He has been desperate to get back involved in the Premier League so it is no surprise to me.

"When he comes in, he knows what he wants and he knows how to get a winning team.

"That showed by the five trophies we won under him."
