Steven Gerrard has had a fantastic career, but there have not been many moment like this for the Liverpool captain.
Whilst Gerrard has won all there is to win in club football – bar that elusive Premier League title – he has endured some tough moments, much to the delight of Manchester United fans.
Gerrard has been the captain whilst Liverpool have struggled for the top four under Gerard Houllier, been pipped to the title by United in 2009, and fallen into the relegation places under Roy Hodgson, whilst also being part of the Kenny Dalglish side that tallied a record low points total in 2011.
All of these events have brought Gerrard mockery from United fans enjoying life at the top under Sir Alex Ferguson.
But now it’s Gerrard’s turn to smile – as Saturday’s defeat to West Brom saw David Moyes side slip into 12th spot in the table – eight points off the top.
That was made all the sweeter for Gerrard after his Liverpool beat Sunderland 3-1 at the Stadium of Light to climb back into second place.
It’s hardly been a frequent occurrence for the Liverpool and England captain over the course of his career, so this weekend allowed the notoriously serious and straight faced Gerrard a smile – just like the rest of us!
