Stoke City 1-0 Liverpool – Match Review

Jon Walters scored the only goal from the penalty spot  to hand Stoke City all three points and leave Liverpool licking their wounds after their first defeat of the season at the Britannia Stadium.

Walters won and blasted home from the spot mid-way through the first half going to ground whilst tangling with Jamie Carragher in the area. The former Ipswich striker duly picked himself up to convert from 12 yards to hand his current club a well earned victory.

The Potters had to be at their best defensively for much of the game with the visitors camping out in the Stoke half for much of the game but were unable to find the much desired equaliser.

Luis Suarez was guilty of missing several chances on a frustrating afternoon for Kenny Dalglish’s side who just couldn’t find a way past a resilient home defence.

Ryan Shawcross had to be at his best when denying Suarez with a superb goal line clearance. The Uruguayan was lively throughout and set up Martin Skrtel after wriggling into some space down the right only for the defender to skew the ball with Matthew Etherington applying just enough pressure.

Jordan Henderson had Liverpool’s best chance of the second half failing to take advantage of the space afforded to him shooting straight at Asmir Begovic after Jose Enrique’s threaded through ball.
