Roberto Martinez believes John Stones is an Everton captain in waiting.
The 20-year-old has hit the ground running for the Toffees this season, starting five of the last six matches.
And the former Wigan manager believes the 20-year old has what it takes to lead Everton in the future.
Martinez said: “John Stones has been in terrific form ever since he played his first (pre-season) friendly in the USA.
“Since then he has been growing as a footballer and he is a complete centre-half.
“These days you need centre-halves who are as good in defensive duties as they are exposing one versus one situations and being good on the ball. John has gone to the next level this season.”
Ahead of this afternoon’s visit to Old Trafford, Martinez likened Stones to experienced Phil Jagielka and Gareth Barry.
He added: “He has a good core to learn from – Jagielka, Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz – and it has been beneficial having Tim Howard behind him.
“Clearly he has earned his place and his performances have shown that.”
