David Moyes has signed the Belgium international twice before, for the Red Devils in 2013 and for Everton back in 2008, and has admitted his interest in swooping for the midfielder’s services once again this summer – alongside those of team-mate Adnan Januzaj.
The 28-year-old has become a somewhat maligned figure at Old Trafford, with many fans questioning his quality and suitability to United’s traditional style of play, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll be a part of Jose Mourinho’s plans next season with midfielder Paul Pogba set to arrive from Juventus.
But the latest quotes from the 6 foot 4 midfielder suggest he’s fully committed to fighting for his place at Old Trafford next season – essentially ruling out the chances of a summer switch to the Stadium of Light.
He told MUTV this weekend; “When you play for United you have to have competition. [There are] a lot of good players with quality, but I’m confident.
“Everyone has to fight for his place; I think that’s why you give everything on the pitch. It’s not easy, so if you’re not good or you don’t do well, the other players then take your place and I think they always push you to be the best.
“I think I can help the team, I can contribute, I can do well for this team. I think the manager trusts me – he knows what I can do, he knows my qualities and that is important. I want to give everything for the team.”
