Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand seems certain to miss the start of the campaign after suffering a hamstring injury during the pre-season clash against Leicester City.

The former West Ham United star will have a scan to determine the extent of the problem.

Meanwhile, club physician Dr Glen Rae is pleased with the way Andy Reid is recovering from an Achilles injury.

The Republic of Ireland international has been out of action since last month’s friendly against Munster but missed the final three months of last season with a calf problem.

“Andy has been receiving specialist treatment and is progressing well with his rehab,” Dr Rae told the club’s official website.

Finally, Marton Fulop, who spent the final few weeks of last season on loan at Manchester City, is on the verge of signing for Ipswich Town, who are managed by former Black Cats boss Roy Keane.
