Sunderland have described the arrest of defender Anton Ferdinand as a “misunderstanding”.
Ferdinand, 25, the brother of England captain Rio, was the subject of an arrest warrant after failing to turn up for a court appearance on Tuesday.
He attended a police station in Newcastle on Wednesday morning where he was subsequently arrested.
Ferdinand could be facing a driving ban as he was convicted of using a mobile phone while driving in July.
The former England Under-21 international already has nine points on his driving licence.
“The club is liaising with Northumbria Police in order to resolve this quickly,” said a Sunderland spokesperson.
