Steven Caulker scored his first Tottenham goal to help Andre Villas-Boas’ side earn a crucial home win against a spirited Aston Villa side who are struggling for results.
A tame first half was eclipsed by chances at both ends in the second half at White Hart Lane as the visitors were in no way outclassed but struggled to beat Hugo Lloris.
Lloris was picked ahead of the experienced Brad Friedal and a clean sheet will have done his chances of holding down his place no harm at all.
Caulker deflected a Jermain Defoe shot past Brad Guzan to cap a great week for the defender who was also called up to the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers next week.
Another Spurs player in the England squad for next week, Aaron Lennon, doubled the hosts lead after cutting inside and firing past the helpless Guzan.
Aston Villa did create chances however and summer arrival Christian Benteke was a constant threat to the Spurs goal but Tottenham managed to hold on to a much needed home clean sheet.
Spurs had to travel to Greece in the Europa League on Thursday and perhaps showed signs of a tough week in the first half, but controlled the second and never looked worried after taking the lead.
The North London side are now up to 5th in the league ahead of rivals Arsenal but Aston Villa still have just one win to their name and are down in 16th position.
