Tottenham decided to keep Erik Lamela at the club after their failed attempts to sign Saido Berahino from West Bromwich Albion, according to reports from the London Evening Standard.
However, it was Marseille that agreed a deal with Spurs to sign Lamela, only for the transfer to be cancelled because of the Lilywhites’ failure to bring Berahino to London.
West Brom rejected five bids from Tottenham to sign their star forward, and the England U-21 star has threatened to go on strike and not play for Baggies owner Jeremy Peace.
Spurs did manage to sign an attacker in former Bayer Leverkusen star Son Heung-Min, with the Korean arriving at Tottenham via a £21.9million deal.
Last season, Lamela, who is the club’s record signing, played 46 games in all competitions, scoring five goals.
