The Clarets seemed to be heading into the second half with a slight lead, but Etienne Capoue scored a stunner to level the scoring at 2-2 two minutes into first half injury time.

Mauricio Pochettino, who admitted to altering his tactics at the break, finally led for the first time in the 49th minute when Vlad Chiriches scored a closed ranged header at the far post.

Three minutes later, Danny Rose put the game out of doubt by being on the receiving end of a Roberto Soldado cross to make it 4-2 on the night, eventually knocking their opponents out of the competition.

Pochettino said: “It was a very interesting game. It was a strange game.

“It was key to go in at half-time at 2-2. We fixed something from the tactical situation and scored two goals quickly to decide the game.”
